Money Question...
« on: September 19, 2005, 07:34:38 PM »
Hey everyone
I think I'm finally arriving to Spain in February. I've decided on going to Barcelona, and I'm hoping on getting a job there teaching.
Now , since I know that the process of getting work, might take a few weeks or months, I was wondering how much money I would need to take along with me  in order to pay for rent, food etc... while I get a job.
So if anyone out there has a good suggestion for this I would really really apreciate it! And also I know that there are other cities that are not as expensive as Barcelona, so if anyone can recomend something else , please do so... I'm gonna be flying there with my girlfriend, so basically we'll be sharing all the expenses. But we have no clue of how much that could be.
so any help would be nice!
thanx a lot!
bye

Money Question...

Hello Erik94...so you are finally going to make the leap, eh?

I recommend that you take a look at this thread which talks about the cost of living...specifically in Barcelona. I am sure you will find the budgeting information extremely helpful.

As far as how much money you should bring... ideally enough so that you can support yourself for 1 year should things not work out the way you hope or plan. Not everyone can afford that kind of money, so I always recommend between 5k-8k euros (remember that the value of the dollar is lower than the euro these days. Those funds, tucked away in a bank account should help you through the slim months while you are building up your teaching schedule.

As far as expensive cities go, Madrid and Barcelona are by far the ones with the most teaching opportunities and the most expensive ones to live in. After these two cities, most people consider Andalucia, particularly Sevilla. I recommend that you also consider Valencia. It's the third largest city in the country and still reasonably economical when compared to the first two.

Good luck and let us know how things work out for you!
