Any Amigos Heading To Barca In August?
« on: July 13, 2005, 03:03:54 PM »
Hola mes amigos, Que tal?

I am heading to BCN at the end of August to do a Spanish and CELTA course - will be there for 7 weeks in total, from 21st August - 8th October. Then I will be either moving to Madrid or Valencia, or staying put in Barcelona. All depending on what happens work-wise and the mission to get a teaching job at the end of it all!!

I am a 27 yr old lass from the UK and I am going completely on my own to Spain - arrrggh! Scary but exciting!  But I wondered if there was anyone else out there who will be in BCN during the time that I am there.... would be well cool if I met some buddies beforehand on here and could maybe meet up for drinks when we are there.... it's worth a shot anyway....

Hope to hear from you soon,
Rachel x

Hi Raz,

I was in Barca last Summer, having gone there, like youself, to take my CELTA course.  Where, exactly, are you planning to study?

You'll find that you'll very soon have new friends, from within your class, who'll be only too keen to share a night out or a very quick lunch! (CELTA meal breaks are notoriously short - try impressing that point on to the mind of a busy Catalan waiter!!

I was told by one barman that my CELTA tutors should understand the need for me to experience the authentic Catalan culture, and so should allow for the customary two hour lunch break - of course, he was absolutely right! LOL.

My own CELTA class organised regular Friday night gatherings, in which we would all set off for a previously undiscovered (by us) location, where a great time would be had by all! No-one had to teach the next day, so we had all weekend, if required, to plan the following Monday's lessons! (just kidding!).
The week-long Gracia street festival, and neighbourhood party, played havoc with our assignment deadlines! LOL

Otherwise,  I spent long  hours with my tutorial group, as we bashed out those very assignments and supported each together through the apparently endless lesson planning!
As one tutor said to our class - 'you're going to be 'married' to your colleagues, in this group, for the next four weeks, so do try, very hard, to be nice to one another!'  As we discovered, it was great advice, especially as we learnt that we were to be assessed on our ability to do just that!

Barca's also a fantastic place to wander around, very safely, as a woman alone!
(There are only a couple of districts where that's not so advisable, but you'll be warned of those!).
The Metro's extremely safe and many families use it till very late at night.  CCTV cameras monitor the platforms. People are always to be seen wandering around Barca, 'till the early hours of the next moring, and I often walked back to my accommodation, from the city centre, at around 3a.m. without any hassle - totally unlike most British cities, including my own!

Taxis are also incredible cheap and still readily available from Plaza Catalunya, even after the Metro's finally closed for the night, if you're really too 'tired' to walk home!

You've chosen a wonderful city for your course - within a week, I guarantee it'll feel like home! The local people and the visitors are all very approachable and friendly, too.  (It's as though they all share a huge sense of delight in having  been both wise and clever enough to choose to be in Barcelona!).

One thing we all wished we'd done, very early on, preferably before starting our course, was to have taken the full 'Tourist Bus' trip around the city! (Yes, I know that seems a very 'uncool' thing to do!)
However, that trip offers a brilliant  intro. to the whole of Barca.
Additionally,  you'll be given, along with your ticket, a book of vouchers, which offers reduced prices for admission to a host of galleries, museums, cable cars, architectural gems, restaurants and other similar attractions!

I suggest that you don't leave that trip to the end of your course period, as I did, or you could find that you'd spent much more cash on getting into those places than you'd needed to - and every Euro's so precious, as you'll know!
The Tourist Bus is a fantastic invention - I do wish we had one here, in my city!

You'll love Barca -   Promise!

Oh, and the CELTA course will be a great experience too! LOL

Barcelona is called \"Barna\" not \"Barça\". \"Barça\" is the name of the best soccer team in the Spanish league. Just trying to help the guiris not seem so....well......guiri.

Hi Shiloh,

Interesting! I can only say that 'Barca', which is, of course, the name given to the city's football team, was also the name used by everyone I came across, whilst there, for the city itself!  I never heard 'Barna' used at all!  Sorry!

I spent lots of time with Catalan friends, too, as well as renting various rooms in local apartments, so I can't think that 'Barca' was simply an English preference, alone!

B.T.W.  Are you in Barcelona now?  If so, I'm deeply envious!
It was exactly a year ago that I was there, completely smitten with the place! It's even more incredible than all those travel writers claim!

Luckily, I now have several friends who're teaching there, so I've an open invitation to return, whenever I need a 'Barca'/'Barna' fix! LOL

Regards,
Sandy.

Hello,

I too am moving to Barcelona from the UK - moving there from Scotland in Septembet,  I'm already a qualified english teacher but seeking fun and friends in barcelona, and a job and someplace to live.  If anyone has any advice/ knowledge of opportunities for either a job or place to live i'd really appreciate it.  Also keen to meet up with people when i get there...perhaps we could go on this intriguing 'Tourist bus'  :P

Hola!  I arrived last week and am looking for teaching positions.  Some of my wife´s coworkers are passing my CV around and I am in the process of contacting schools, academies, etc.  As an American, it is going to be tough to work legally, but I am optimistic at some of the avenues available.  We love doing outdoor activities and meeting people.  If anyone else in Barna (I also thought it was \"Barça\"   ) wants to tomar una copa, we would be glad to meet up.

Cheers,
-Mitch

Hi,

I too am planning on going to Barcelona but unfortunately I have to wait at least 18 months as I want to finish my degree in thr UK first. I'm also planning to take a CELTA course in the UK but am tempted to do it in Barcelona.

I have been to several different places in Spain but haven't visited Barcelona since I went with my school quite some time ago. I am planning on visiting again on my own at the end of October just to remind myself why I fell in love with the place as a teenager and to be sure it's where I really want to go. I will be relocating there with my daughter who is ten at the moment.

I get the impression that work can be pretty difficult to come by which is a major concern as I have the little one to support. I have a bit saved to support us for a few months if I cant find employment but it wont last forever.
Any help and advice would be gratefully appreciated. Also if anyone is going to be there when I visit (around the 21st Oct) it would be great to meet up and talk to someone who is already there and knows what they are on about.
