To Teach Or Not To Teach?!
« on: July 06, 2005, 03:18:08 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am having a bit of a twentysomething life crisis at the moment!

I have already been accepted onto a TEFL/Spanish course in Barcelona at the end of August, and I just CANNOT decide whether to go ahead with it or not. I live in London at the moment (for 3 years now, and getting a little tired of it)and I am finishing my job in a few weeks. I would love the opportunity of moving to Spain for a few months and doing something completely different to what I do now (media).

Problem is... I am just that little bit scared of taking the plunge into the complete unknown. I am worried that I won't get a job / make friends  etc etc. It's ridiculous I know. Are there loads of Brits out in Barca? Is it quite straight forward to get a job?

Anyone have any advice out there?!!

Anything would be GREATLY appreciated... I have to make my mind up once and for all....

Thanks,
Rachel

First of all. . . it's completely natural to be a bit freaked by changing up your life like that, you're not the first person to come to these boards or any other board and look for some advice, encouragement, and hope for your plans to go abroad.  So.....you're not alone.

If you've signed up for a TEFL course then you will undoubtedly meet about 15 other people from the UK, US, or Australia.  English speaking friend network: covered.

If you're unattached and don't have any real solid plans of where to go from here in terms of life.....GO FOR IT!  What's the worst thing that could possibly happen?  You hate it and you resume life as normal where you are and you've only sacrificed a month of your life.  But what's the BEST thing that could happen?  You love teaching, you love Barcelona, you make a ton of new adventurous people like yourself who aren't afraid to make changes and experience new things, you learn some Spanish and maybe even Catalan, your scope of the world and of other cultures is enhanced dramatically, and you walk away from a month or a year or five years with an experience that most people couldn't ever even dream of having.

My advice is to strap on the courage and JUST DO IT!!!  You'll never know until you try.  I'm 31 years old and was in a HUGE rut and sold everything I had and went to another country without knowing the language or a single person and did my CELTA course and I can say without flinching that it was the singlemost transformative (is that a word?) experience of my young life.  Things just won't ever be the same.

You never know what's behind this door.  Open it an just see!  And good luck.

Hey Rachel

As a fellow Brit (albeit in Madrid) and someone who used to work in the media herself, I just wanted to say relax and go for it. I'm in my 30s (and fighting for every last second of them) and we've just moved here this year and had exactly the same worries. You'll make lots of friends (esp. on your TEFL course) and should have no problem getting jobs. Also, get on message boards and find out what other Brits are doing in Barcelona and go along. You're 99% guaranteed to be made welcome.

As Spain 212 said - what's the worst that could happen? You have to go back home? In the media, you'll always be able to pick up work in the UK if that does happen so it's not as if you're burning all your bridges - and if you write, you can do freelance work in Barca as well (I seem to remember there are some English-language publications on that side of the country, but do a Google check).

Hmmmm, just seem to have made all the arguments that were made to me when we came across
