TEFL Schools
« on: January 13, 2005, 09:11:47 PM »
The TEFL schools that I have been investigating advertise that they assist in job placement or guarantee a certain number of teaching hours.  I've read in many posts to be wary of these promises.  I was hoping those of you that attended these schools could share your experience.  Did they help you to find a job?  Did they just hand you a list of schools and send you off on your way?  Were there contact names they gave you?  Did they have opportunities posted at their school?  If you could list the school that you went to as well, that would be beneficial.

I interviewed with a company awhile back that trained in their own methodology (didn't require a certificate),paid well, and offered me a job.  A person I know was hired by this company and is getting burned out.  They are giving her all the undesired hours (as expected) and she is traveling more than she is actually teaching.  Now I am pursuing the TEFL route and trying to weigh the opportunity cost of a distance learning program ($300) vs. something onsite ($1,700).  Unfortunately with distance I wouldn't be getting teaching practice.  A friend of mine used to teach and said he has many contacts for me....trying to figure out if I'm going to establish some good job networking contacts by doing a TEFL program on-site.

Last question  :D , has anyone gone to spain to visit some of these schools and able to negotiate a cheaper price?

Thanks!!
